Macau has four main ways in — the airport on Taipa, two ferry terminals, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge and the land crossings from Zhuhai — and your eSIM works the same way at every one of them. If you installed it before you left, you can be online moments after switching off airplane mode, ready to message your hotel, check bus times or find the shuttle bus stop.

Before you arrive

  • Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, set it as your mobile-data line and turn on data roaming for it (not for your home SIM). The plan does not start until it first connects in Macau.
  • Save your hotel’s name and address in Chinese and Portuguese as well as English — many taxi drivers speak little English.
  • Download offline maps of Macau and a bus app; our essential apps guide lists the useful ones.
  • Many large hotels and resorts run free shuttle buses from the ferry terminals and border crossings. Check your hotel’s website for its routes and stops.
  • Carry your passport even if you are coming from Hong Kong or Zhuhai: Macau has its own immigration checks.

The moment you arrive

  1. Turn off airplane mode.
  2. Check that the eSIM is your mobile-data line and that data roaming is on for it.
  3. Give the phone a moment to join CTM or 3 Macau (CTM only on Non-HK IP plans). Your plan’s validity starts with this first connection.
  4. If nothing happens, switch airplane mode on and off once, or choose CTM manually in your network settings.

Arriving from Hong Kong or Zhuhai with another eSIM active? Switch your mobile-data line to the Macau eSIM once you are through immigration. If you are on the China (mainland, Hong Kong, Macao) plan, it moves to a Macau network on its own — give it a minute after the border.

By air: Macau International Airport (MFM)

The airport sits at the eastern end of Taipa, a short ride from the Cotai resorts. The LRT Taipa Line stops at Airport station, with trains through Cotai and Taipa to Barra on the Peninsula, and the line ends one stop later at the Taipa Ferry Terminal next door. Public buses and taxis leave from outside arrivals, and some hotels run shuttle buses — check yours before you fly.

Airport Wi-Fi is a handy backup if you need to troubleshoot, but with the eSIM already installed you should not need it.

By ferry: Outer Harbour and Taipa terminals

High-speed ferries from the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan take about an hour and arrive at one of two Macau terminals. Ferries from Shenzhen use them too, so check which terminal your ticket shows:

  • Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, on the Macau Peninsula, is the closer one for the Historic Centre and the hotels around the old town.
  • Taipa Ferry Terminal, beside the airport, is a short ride from the Cotai resorts and has its own station at the end of the LRT Taipa Line.

Both terminals have taxi stands, public bus stops and shuttle buses run by many hotels and resorts. Signal on the water comes and goes, and phones can briefly pick up Hong Kong or mainland networks that a Macau plan cannot use, so check your connection once you are ashore rather than mid-crossing.

By road: the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge

Shuttle buses cross the bridge around the clock between the Hong Kong Port, close to Hong Kong International Airport on Lantau, and the Macao Port; the ride takes around 40 minutes. You clear Hong Kong immigration before boarding and Macau immigration on arrival. From the Macao Port, public buses run to the Peninsula and to Taipa and Cotai, and taxis wait outside.

Your connection will change on the way. A Hong Kong plan fades out over the water and a Macau plan connects as you reach Macau; the Macao Port also lies close to Zhuhai, so your phone may briefly show mainland networks. Once you are through immigration, check that the Macau eSIM is your data line.

Flying into Hong Kong and heading straight to Macau? The bridge is the most direct land route. Hong Kong’s airport also has transfer services to Macau for some passengers who do not want to enter Hong Kong; check the current options with the airport or your airline before you travel.

From Zhuhai: the Border Gate and Hengqin

  • Border Gate (Portas do Cerco): the busiest crossing, at the northern tip of the Macau Peninsula opposite Gongbei in Zhuhai. Buses, taxis and hotel shuttle buses leave from the transport hub beside it.
  • Hengqin Port: the crossing from Hengqin island into Cotai. The LRT Hengqin Line links the port with Lotus station, where you change to the Taipa Line for Cotai, Taipa and the Peninsula.

Both crossings are so close to the mainland that your phone can see Chinese networks on either side of the border. A Macau plan only connects to Macau networks, so if data drops near the border, choose CTM manually. If you have been in mainland China on the China (mainland, Hong Kong, Macao) plan, it carries on in Macau with no changes needed.

If your eSIM does not connect

  • Check that data roaming is on for the eSIM line and that it is selected for mobile data.
  • Toggle airplane mode or restart the phone.
  • Turn off automatic network selection and choose CTM (or 3 Macau on standard plans).
  • Troubleshoot over Wi-Fi if you need to: hotels offer it, and the free FreeWiFi.MO network covers many public places.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy a SIM card when I arrive in Macau?

No. If you installed your Macau eSIM before the trip, you are online as soon as you turn off airplane mode and your phone joins CTM or 3 Macau.

Which ferry terminal is closer to the Historic Centre?

The Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal on the Macau Peninsula. The Taipa Ferry Terminal, next to the airport, is handier for the Cotai resorts and has its own LRT station.

Why did my data stop near the Border Gate?

Your phone may be trying to use a mainland Chinese network, which a Macau-only plan cannot connect to. Pick CTM manually in your network settings and the connection should come back.
